I CANNOT RUN THE BOSTON MARATHON 2011...
Boston was going to be my big event for the year. I started training when I returned home from Bali. It was January 14th, -32 with the wind chill and 20km to go. I stopped half way, had a little tear filled pout and kept going…all in the goal to run a 332-335hr at the April 18th Boston marathon of 42km. I have been healthy my whole life, never in the hospital, rarely sick with colds, etc. Aside from sensitive skin I am good to go. Then middle of February I end of in the hospital with a pulmonary embolism and now on anticoagulation medication for a minimum of six months... my healthy lungs were covered with blood clots. My work out regime screamed to a halt as I gasped walking up a set of stairs. Six weeks later I am back working out six days a week and running about three days a week. However I missed four weeks of training and this is the first year Boston will not allow you to defer. So my sweet victory to qualify will have to be re-lived this year. I plan to run Victoria or Kelowna to re-qualify and then run Boston next year. This experience has helped me to realize that it does not matter how healthy you are, sometimes these things are out of your hands. I do not smoke or drink. I eat fairly healthy and lead a very healthy lifestyle. So do your best to take good care of yourself but never take your good health for granted.
